The Sphere Training of Trainers (ToT), delivered in Tirana, Albania (June 2022), was part of the Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Initiative for South-Eastern Europe (DPPI-SEE) regional capacity building programme. The initiative aims to strengthen the preparedness and response capacity of member states by enhancing the application and dissemination of Sphere standards across humanitarian actors in the region.
Building on a multi-year engagement that included regional trainings and online facilitation programmes, the ToT brought together experienced humanitarian practitioners from across South-Eastern Europe to deepen both their technical understanding of the Sphere Handbook (2018) and their facilitation competencies. The training focused on strengthening participants’ ability to deliver high-quality Sphere trainings, while reinforcing practical application of humanitarian principles, standards, and cross-cutting themes.
The five-day workshop combined in-depth technical sessions with applied training methodologies, enabling participants to practice delivering sessions, engage in peer learning, and strengthen their capacity to contextualise Sphere standards in diverse operational environments. The programme marked a key milestone in expanding a regional network of certified Sphere trainers, contributing to more consistent, principled, and accountable humanitarian action across the region.
The training was developed and delivered by a specialised facilitation team, with Aya Yagan serving as Lead Trainer, supported by regional Sphere trainers and in collaboration with Sphere and DPPI-SEE.
