Produced in collaboration with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy (part of Save the Children) and funded by the DEC within the SHIFT programme, this research explores the role of local organisations in the humanitarian response to the 2023 Turkiye and Syria earthquakes. It encompasses grassroots volunteer groups, community-based organisations, civil society organisations, and NGOs, examining how they mobilised, adapted their governance structures, and navigated partnership and funding dynamics alongside international actors.
The research covers organisational adaptation, coordination and partnership dynamics, funding models and resource allocation, and sustainability and capacity building, offering recommendations for donors and intermediary organisations on how to better support and empower local actors in humanitarian responses.
